News ReleaseGestureTek Creates Prehistoric Gondwana 3D Interactive Flying and Virtual Game Experience for MuseumsGestureTek to Exhibit Gesture Control Display Solutions for Museums at 2009 Museum Expo
The Gondwana project began nearly a year ago, when the Gondwana – Das Praehistorium museum was on a quest for a fun interactive 3D application for their new evolution exhibit. They were looking for an interactive attraction in a 3D environment that could transport children back to the prehistoric Cretaceous and Carboniferous periods and allow them to experience the sensation of flying, like an ancient pterosaur or giant dragonfly. The result was a networked interactive game experience that allows two gamers to play against each other as they watch their full body video image immersed onscreen. Using gestures and motions to navigate and control the game, players compete as they fly through the air, hunt for food and defend against predators. Leaning left or right controls the direction of flight, crouching down sends them diving after their prey and arm-flapping motions controls speed and altitude during flight. It’s an interactive entertainment experience that also educates young minds about prehistoric creatures, the species that existed at the time and the various ways they competed for resources. The exhibit’s creative director David Lazenby of UK-based design firm Lazenby Design Associates says, “The strength of the project lays in the superbly recreated immersive environments. We wanted to carry the spirit of the up-close-and-personal experience beyond the natural habitats right through to our interactive gallery. GestureTek has delivered a fun, engaging interactive game experience with great attention to realism and detail.” “GestureTek’s multi-touch solutions and other no-touch interactive and immersive technologies offer unlimited potential for infotainment and edutainment in museum environments,” says GestureTek’s President Vincent John Vincent. “Museums can creatively showcase priceless artifacts, present complex concepts and principles and teach about naturally-occurring phenomena, while engaging visitors in a fun and entertaining touch-free environment. The technology also works well for interactive guide maps and way-finding systems.” See the Gondwana case study at http://www.gesturetek.com/gesturextreme/businesscases/businesscases_gondwana.php.
